Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore laboratories
The Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research center with activities in atomic and high-energy physics and in energy and environmental problems. It is the part of the center founded in 1931 as the Radiation Laboratory by Ernest Lawrence and is located in the Berkeley hills near San Francisco, Calif. The laboratory is operated by the University of California and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy
The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, formerly part of the Radiation Laboratory, became a separate institution in 1952. Located in Livermore, Calif., it conducts research in nuclear explosives (for both weaponry and peaceful purposes), fusion reactions, and health problems caused by artificial radiation. The laboratory conducts underground nuclear-explosion tests at a site in Nevada.
